UPM's Facultad de Informática produces most papers on informatics in the Madrid region

Facultad de Informática accounts for 16.7% of everything published on informatics in the Madrid region from 2000 to 2006

10 April 2008. According to Madrid region scientific and technical output indicators just published by madri+d, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's Facultad de Informática tops the regional ranking of informatics articles published in the 2000-2006 period.

The UPM's Facultad de Informática has published a total of 327 articles on informatics (covering theory and methods, artificial intelligence and computer science) in the 2000-2006 period. This accounts for 16.7% of everything published by the region's seven specialized institutions. The runner-up was the Universidad Carlos III's Escuela Politécnica Superior, with 292 articles accounting for 14.9% of all papers, whereas the Universidad Complutense's Facultad de Informática, with 251 articles equivalent to 12.8% of total output, came third.

The UPM's Facultad de Informática published a total of 210 articles on theory and methods in the 2000-2006 period. This accounts for almost 4% of all papers published in the region and 0.80% of the total published nationwide. The Universidad Complutense's Facultad de Informática, with 186 articles, and the Universidad Carlos III's Escuela Politécnica Superior, with 168 articles, ranked second and third, respectively. The articles published by the UPM's Facultad de Informática generated 0.71 citations per article, compared with 0.86 for articles published by the UCM's Facultad de Informática and 0.47 for articles published by the UC3's Escuela Politécnica Superior.

Informatics and Computer Science

The UPM's Facultad de Informática ranks second in the production of articles on informatics and artificial intelligence (WoS 2000-2006), with a total of 105 articles published in the 2000-2006 period, not far behind the UC3's Escuela Politécnica Superior, with 107 articles. The UPM's Facultad de Informática accounts for 4.3% of the regional output in this field, compared with 4.4% for the UC3's Escuela Politécnica Superior, and 0.73% of Spanish citations related to this subject matter.

The UPM's Facultad de Informática ranks second for articles published in specialized Spanish journals on computer science (ICYT 2000-2006), with 12 articles published in the 2000-2006 period, just behind the UC3's Escuela Politécnica Superior, with 17 articles. The UCM's Facultad de Informática is third with 11 articles.

Note that the UPM's Facultad de Informática has a specialization index of 21.98 in this field within the Madrid region, whereas this index is only 7.5 for the UC3's Escuela Politécnica Superior. According to this ranking, the Facultad de Informática has a specialization index of 29.10.

Artificial Intelligence

As a whole, the UPM's Facultad de Informática generated 453 articles on 34 different subjects in the 2000-2006 period, of which, as already mentioned, 210 were on informatics, theory and methods, 105 on informatics and artificial intelligence and 39 on informatics and software engineering. The mean impact factor of these articles was, respectively, 0.473, 0.750 and 0.812.

The Department of Artificial Intelligence tops the UPM's Facultad the Informática department ranking with 178 articles accounting for 65% of all articles authored by Facultad de Informática departments. The Department of Artificial Intelligence is also the UPM department that has authored most articles, followed by the UPM's Department of Biotechnology, with 162 articles, and the UPM's Department of Electronics Engineering, with 161 articles.

The UPM's Facultad de Informática also excels in the categories of applied mathematics (35 articles), mathematics (26 articles), electrical and electronics engineering (again 26 articles), applied informatics (25 articles) and information systems informatics (19 articles) publications.

Globally speaking, the UPM's Facultad de Informática has a prominent position in the ranking of institutions with the highest scientific output in the Madrid region (over 100 articles) in the 2001-2005 period, having published a total of 310 articles, an average of 62 articles per year and 1.4% of the regional total, according to WoS.

According to Prof. Juan José Moreno Navarro, former National Programme on Information and Communications Technologies manager and Spanish representative for the European Union 6th Framework Programme Information Society Technologies priority, the data disclosed by the regional indicators match up with other indicators and confirm that the UPM's Facultad de Informática has a a lot of world-class research groups. Note that this leadership in scientific quality is associated with high quality teaching, as, in a constantly evolving field like informatics, quality teaching depends on research excellence, Moreno Navarro adds.

Madrid leadership

The scientific output of the Madrid region in the WoS, ICYT, IME and ISOC databases amounted to a total of 59,216 documents in 2001-2004. This accounts for 28% of total Spanish output, according to these indicators. Spain's research potential is concentrated in Madrid, as authors and institutions based in the Madrid region publish almost a third of everything published in Spain.

The Higher Scientific Research Council's (CSIC) Scientific Information and Documentation Centre (CINDOC) analysed the above indicators as part of a follow-up of earlier studies. The initiative was sponsored by the 2007 Madrid Region Scientific Output Indicators Programme, which is part of the 4th Interamerican Science and Technology Programme (PRICYT). The study analyses all international scientific and technological output in the Madrid region in the 2000-2006 period, as well as national output in the four-year period from 2001 to 2005.
